As a profession that holds service at its core, librarians often have trouble saying no, communicating boundaries, and managing instructor expectations. The heart of the trouble is not understanding when to say no but not knowing how to do it so that both parties feel positively about the interaction. This presentation will be a facilitated discussion with participants to produce strategies and scripts that can be adapted to many of the difficult conversations that librarians typically have with instructors. Potential topics for discussion include managing instructor expectations, respectfully communicating boundaries, saying no, and handling instructor disappointment.
